Winding back clock costly

IN cult comedy film classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off, it didn't work, but a Concord man has found a way to turn back car odometers.
Nouraldine Chamma was found guilty in Burwood Court late last month of five offences under the Motor Dealers Act. He was convicted and fined $20,455.
The court heard that Chamma was buying cars and winding back their odometer readings by between 79,000km and 253,000km, then selling them to unsuspecting customers.
His odometer discrepancies totalled about 657,000km.
The amount he was ordered to pay included fines, costs and consumer compensation.
"Chamma's utter disregard for motor dealing laws is appalling and his convictions should serve as a very real warning to others," State Fair Trading Minister Linda Burney said.
"Odometer tampering is a serious offence as a vehicle's odometer reading is an important consideration for consumers when choosing a second-hand vehicle.
"It's only a matter of time before those engaging in this illegal activity get caught and pay dearly.
"Moreover, their foolish actions will probably give them away sooner or later."
