Most wanted: The cops who played footy
Wednesday 14 May, 2008 12:00pm
WESTS Tigers and NSW Police have joined forces to honour the greatest rugby league police team as part of the Centenary celebrations in 2008.
Names such as Johnny Raper, Paul Sironen, Craig Young and Frank Farrell are among hundreds of men who in past years combined a career in football and a career in policing.
Police want members of the public to help nominate players for the team.
The team will be officially announced and introduced to the crowd at the Wests Tigers' home game against Parramatta Eels at ANZ Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park, on Sunday, June 15.
"There are some great players who passed through our ranks and there'll be people we might have forgotten about who should be in the team," Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said.
"I'm sure those who love their rugby league will help us remember some of the great names who played, many of whom for their country."
The criteria will be those who have played first grade and above. Nominations can be sent via email to leaguelegends@police.nsw.gov .au
Wests Tigers general manager of sales and marketing Scott Longmuir said the police promotion was another first for the club.
"We work really hard at Wests Tigers to come up with different and exciting themes to help promote our home matches," Mr Longmuir said.
"The police do a great job in protecting the community and we are more than happy to be involved in this great concept whereby the best rugby league playing officers will be named."
