REIGNING Kentwell Cup premiers Drummoyne collected a bonus point for scoring four tries before half-time in the match against University of NSW at David Phillips Field on Saturday.
Prop Tuainafua Veiru opened the scoring with a burrowing effort close to the line.
Captain and flanker Nathan Landrey was next to score, receiving the last pass from flanker Dusty Elsom who had run 20m from a lineout.
Elsom followed this with a try of his own shortly afterwards. Centre Inoke Turuva scored the try of the match from the resulting kickoff, running 70m before chipping over the fullback and regathering for a 26-0 half-time lead.
The try-scoring spree did not slow down in the second half with tries to replacement lock David Mew and second tries to Turuva and Veiru, which took Drummoyne to a resounding 48-3 win.
The loss of three key backline players before the match and an early injury to captain Steve Wilson affected the cohesion of Drummoyne seconds, who scored an early try through prop Teokila Leao but were down 7-5 at half-time. Leao scored his second try in the second half but numerous handling errors cost the visitors possession. A late try to UNSW gave them the victory 14-10.
Drummoyne stay on top of the Burke Cup ladder on points for and against.
Third grade drew 12-12, while fourths and fifths lost close encounters 8-3 and 8-7 respectively.
Colts had another good showing but were outclassed 38-10.
Drummoyne maintain a slim lead in the club championship and travel to Hudson Park to take on St Patrick's Old Boys this weekend.
