LOCAL tennis champ Fabiana Greco has been awarded a scholarship for the National High Performance Tennis Academy at Sydney Olympic Park.
The 13-year-old Newington resident is among eight junior tennis stars in her age group who were awarded scholarships to train full-time at the academy.
Fabiana, who started at the academy on Monday, said she was excited about receiving the scholarship.
"I feel pretty good because I've trained very hard to get where I am now," she said.
The partial state scholarship will cover the majority of Fabiana's tuition and education fees, as well as training costs.
Fabiana also travelled to the John Newcombe Tennis Academy with her coach, John Thomson, in 2006. There she had the chance to meet the Australian tennis legend.
The trip allowed Fabiana to test herself against other juniors who trained at the academy full-time.
"It was a good experience to visit that academy and see all the kids train every day," she said.
Her current training schedule involves hitting with her dad, Fernando, or her coach every day.
But she says this is likely to increase once she starts at the academy. "I'll be on the court a lot more," she said.
Fabiana has been nominated for the Inner-West Weekly Junior Sports Star award.
She is in the running to win a medal and $1000.
